About Us
Atlantic Contracting has deep roots in road building starting in the early 1900's when Stephen Madden, son of an Irish immigrant began building gravel roads in Wisconsin to supplement his farming activities.
His son R.T. Madden worked for his father and later on government projects and with other contractors to hone his road building skills, launching his own paving company R. T. Madden Company in the mid 1940's. R. T. started out paving city streets, curb and gutter, and progressed to highway paving.
R. T.'s son, John joined the business in the 1950's and became president in 1963. Over the years, R. T. Madden won several paving awards. John expanded the business to include aggregate crushing and recycling, materials, and demolition. R. T. Madden was a contributor to West Virginia's road building initiative in the 1970's. Sensing the opportunity in the Washington metropolitan area, John relocated in 1984 and renamed the company Atlantic Contracting and Material Co., Inc. For twenty five years, we have worked on key federal and regional government projects.
Two of John’s sons continue in the business today. Tom, who joined the business in 1984, and Mike in 1992. Tom became president in 2003 and expanded the business to include excavating & grading and underground utilities.
Atlantic Contracting and Material Company continues its excellence in paving and delivering services that consistently exceed clients' expectations.
